#2 How we chose the right vehicle for us

During the two years of planning, we dedicated time and energy to defining the specifications of the vehicle that would suit our personal needs.

In this article, we'll share the reflections we made to arrive at the choice of the vehicle that best fits our requirements. This is because, for us, selecting the right means of transportation hasn't been as simple as it might seem.

From health-related concerns (such as the case of a French couple needing oxygen cylinders on board, or our need for a spacious galley to store medicines and allergy-friendly food) to economic aspects, including fuel consumption and maintenance costs—because, as we know, the larger and more powerful the vehicle, the more significant the expenses—we'll explore the elements we considered and hope they may prove helpful to you as well.

Happy researching and happy reading! 😊

REQUIREMENTS THAT HELPED US CHOOSE THE VEHICLE SUITED TO OUR NEEDS

  • Where do you expect to travel most frequently? In urban areas, deserts, mountains, forests, remote or off-road locations? Do you want your Expedition Truck designed to tackle challenging terrains like mud, snow, sand, or rocks?
  • Or do you plan to traverse wide and comfortable urban roads?
  • Are you planning short excursions of a few weeks or longer journeys that might last months or years?
  • Do you require storage capacity in your Expedition Truck to meet your needs during longer trips?
  • Or do you anticipate using only equipped rest areas and campsites?
  • Do you envision energy solutions like solar panels or diesel or petrol generators to ensure energy independence during longer journeys?
  • How do you plan to manage waste and access potable water?
  • What are your comfort requirements? Do you need a large galley? Do you have special requirements for the bathroom? Do you need special space for the sleeping area? Make these considerations for each room. For example, do you need a garage to store bicycles, motorbikes, quads?
  • Have you considered connectivity needs, such as internet access, especially if you intend to work or stay connected during your travels?
  • Are you capable of handling basic maintenance and any necessary repairs during your trips?
  • Have you considered the necessary space to carry essential equipment and tools to handle sudden mechanical issues?
  • Is the Expedition Truck you have in mind flexible and adaptable to various travel situations and needs? Can it be driven with the license you already possess, or does it require an upgraded license (C1 and C categories)? Are you willing to bear the cost of obtaining an upgraded license? Have you considered that a larger vehicle has lower mobility and might restrict passage on certain roads/cities/bridges, etc.?

Have you accounted for an emergency fund? Have you planned for a long-term budget for maintenance, potential modifications, and future upgrades? Have you considered that different vehicle categories entail significantly different expenses?

How many people will sleep and travel in the Expedition Truck?

Do you prefer a vehicle without electronics or do you lean towards a more recent vehicle?

AdvantagesDisadvantages
Vehicles without electronicsVehicles without electronics offer greater simplicity and ease of repair for those with basic mechanical skills, with accessible maintenance and repair interventions anywhere in the world.Vehicles without electronics may have lower performance and higher fuel consumption, as well as reduced safety due to the absence of modern control devices.
Newer vehicles with electronicsNewer vehicles with electronics offer superior performance, lower fuel consumption, advanced safety with features like airbags and ABS, as well as connectivity and enhanced comfort due to integrated technology. The presence of electronics in vehicles adds complexity to repairs, altitude limitations, resulting in higher maintenance costs, and increased vulnerability to electronic failures, necessitating specialized attention.

What type of prepping do you plan to have on your vehicle? What are your specific needs?
Here are some general considerations for a vehicle like an Expedition Truck:

Off-Road and SafetySturdy tires suitable for various terrains. Reinforced suspensions to handle rugged terrains. Underbody protection to shield the engine and chassis from damage. Winch for recovery situations.
Autonomy and SustainabilityAdequate electrical power system with solar panels and/or diesel/petrol generators. Service batteries to ensure sufficient energy storage. Water storage capacity and efficient waste management solutions. Adequate fuel autonomy.
Communication and SafetySatellite communication devices for remote areas. Comprehensive first aid kit.
Off-Road EquipmentOff-road driving equipment like Winch, anchors, shovels, sand/mud plates, and towing straps. Tire repair kit and essential tools. Optional additional air compressor. Emergency lighting kit.
Comfort and SurvivalLong-term food reserves, long-term water supply, and/or water purifier. Suitable heating/cooling systems. Thermal sleeping bags and camping gear.
Navigation and Orientation ToolsSatellite navigation tools, mapping instruments, and paper maps. Compass and orientation tools. Survival manuals and basic survival skills.
Maintenance and RepairsTools and equipment for regular maintenance and emergency repairs. Essential spare parts (e.g., starter motor, alternator, various filters, bulbs, etc.). Duplicate keys for tire disassembly.
Personal SafetyPersonal defense tools (legally permitted in the country one is in, e.g., bear spray). Locks and security devices for the vehicle. Consider joining Overland traveler communities/groups for increased safety, information, and assistance.
Connectivity and EntertainmentInternet connection devices. Onboard entertainment system (audio/video) for long journeys and relaxation moments.

In conclusion, taking the necessary time to analyze these various points allows you to identify your needs and consequently understand which vehicle best suits your requirements.

The real secret is: DON'T RUSH!

Let's now come to one of the fundamental principles of strategies: 'WISE OBSERVATION,' which means 'looking at what others have done to learn from ideas and mistakes.
